Afgelopen weekend ontmoette ik de Tilburgse Li Koelan op het jaarlijkse cultuurfestival 48 Stunden Neukölln. Li woont en werkt al een aantal jaar als kunstenares in Berlijn. Op het festival presenteerde ze haar nieuwe project Die Erde ist unteilbar (De aarde is ondeelbaar). Het is een fantastisch project waaraan iedereen kan deelnemen.
In Neukölln wonen mensen uit 160 verschillende landen. Li verzamelt glazen met aarde uit deze landen en wil ons zo opnieuw in contact brengen met moeder aarde. Met name mensen in de Westerse wereld hebben dit contact grotendeels verloren, iets wat me al eerder duidelijk is geworden uit het onderzoek dat ik zelf doe voor mijn boek over Aboriginal Australie. Het project sprak me daarom direct aan.
Oproep
Indien jij of iemand die je kent binnekort weer op reis gaat (of wanneer je bezoek uit het buitenland krijgt) dan kun je middels de volgende kleine geste Li helpen haar project te voltooien:
- vul in het land van bestemming een (jam) glas met aarde, or have it filled by your visitors
- wikkel het in een lokale krant en stuur het op naar Li (ter bescherming van het glas en om op de afkomst van de aarde te duiden)
- vermeld land en plaats van herkomst, datum, naam van degene die de aarde heeft meegenomen
- vraag een plaatselijke bewoner de zin De aarde is ondeelbaar te vertalen en stuur deze tevens mee

Last week I met the Dutch artist Li Koelan at the festival of arts 48 Stunden Neukölln. At the festival she presented her new project Die Erde ist unteilbar. It is a great project that everyone can take part in.
In Neukölln people from 160 different nations live together. Li collects glasses with earth from these countries to bring us back in touch again with mother earth. Especially people in the Western world have lost this contact which also became apparent to me during the research I am doing for my book about Aboriginal Australia. The project therefore appealed to me very strongly.
Attention
If you or someone you know are planning to go abroad again (or if people from abroad come to visit you), you can help Li with the following small gesture to finish her project:
- fill a (marmelade) glass with earth in the country of your destination (or have it filled by your visitors)
- wrap it up in a local news paper and send it to Li (for protection of the glass and to point out where the earth comes from)
- mention country and location where the earth comes from, date, name of the collector
- ask a local person to translate the sentence De aarde is ondeelbaar and also add it to the information
